Arrived in Natal!

Heraclitus arrived in Natal this morning - we will stay here 4 days to relax after an intense voyage and stock up on food and supplies. Seems like the trip was a month long and not just 9 days...one of those...raining a lot here, enormous sand dunes and it's hot and humid--and friendly as ever like everywhere in Brazil.
Heraclitus passes at slack tide under the Newton Navarro Bridge into the Potengi River. The current builds up to 2-3 knots and the river is not very wide-- a high maintenance anchorage so we are moving on to Maranao, our next destination in Brazil.

What is life like on a boat? I've always wondered and I'm trying to write about a sea voyage, but I've never had the opportunity to take one so it's really a shot in the dark for me. What sort of jobs are there on a boat? How do you navigate? I'm sure modern ships have GPS and all, but do you ever use the stars?

There's a captain, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Mate, Bosun - incharge of the hull, engineers, on our ship we happen to take turns cooking, but someone is in charge of all the stores and foods, there's a 'rigger', a small boats manager etc. you should check our website www.rvheraclitus.org, there are somes stories of crew members about life onboard. Bye, Christine
